Not All Fans Pleased With Bucs Video

CLOSED CAPTIONING WAS LEFT OUT IN RUSH

TAMPA - Most Tampa Bay Buccaneers fans were thrilled with the "Super Bowl XXXVII Champions" video released Feb. 11 by NFL Films.

But others had a problem with the program.

Hearing-impaired customers saw a "cc" label on the DVD package, indicating that the Bucs' 2002 season highlights and Jan. 26 Super Bowl victory were closed captioned.

They are not.

"I've been attending Bucs games for 18 years," wrote "loyal, die-hard fan" Kathy Borzell of Florida Self-Help for Hard of Hearing People. "Quite simply, I love the Bucs! I have a severe hearing loss and the only way for me to fully appreciate a DVD or videotape is to have captioning. When the Super Bowl DVD and videotape became available, I went immediately to the store to purchase them assuming that both would be captioned. The DVD indicated "cc' for closed captioning but it was not captioned. The videotape was also not captioned. This is not communication access for all people."

It was an oversight made in haste, the video's producers said in a statement Thursday.

"NFL Films and Warner Home Video take great care in ensuring that the majority of their home video releases include the closed-captioning feature," it said.

"However, in order to get copies of the Super Bowl XXXVII highlights to Buccaneers fans in record time, the tight production schedule did not permit NFL Films or WHV to include the closed-captioning feature. Unfortunately, the "cc' symbol, which is part of standard packaging language, was erroneously included on the DVD jacket. Both NFL Films and WHV apologize for the error."

A Warner spokesman said the company is working to remedy the situation.
